Do Log Homes Cost More to Build?

Since the majority of our homes are designed by the customer, a full price list on sizes is not available. There are too many possibilities to list them all. There are several stock plans available or we may assist you in designing a custom plan with you.

What Are Log Homes Built With?

We specialize in a 6” x 12” heart-cut white pine log with a full dove-tail notch. A dove-tail joint is one of the strongest joints possible. You can see an example in the picture above.

The logs are air dried, when possible. Air-dried logs are available according to supply and demand. The package is not a pre-cut kit. Exact length cuts are made on the job site. The basic package includes logs for the exterior walls and the porch posts & beams. This applies to single story homes with factory trusses, beams, ceiling joists, steps, etc. The spikes, bolts, alignment rods, pole barn nails, 2 x 6 window & door jambs, load bearing blocks, and weather-stripping are typically included in the packages. We can leave the doors and windows out if the customer wishes to supplement these.

Delivery is also included in all of our packages. Be sure to check out our gallery to see more examples of our completed cabins.

Construction and Services
We prefer to erect the logs to insure for proper settlement. A complete “dry-in” can be arranged at a reasonable cost. For an additional cost, the hand-hewn character can be added to your house.

Log Erection
We erect just the side walls.

Foundation and Sub-floor
Concrete footer with concrete block walls.
Monolithic slab is poured footers with slab all in one.
Construct the sub-floor.

Under Roof (roof timbers or trusses)
This is a term we use to describe once we get the side walls and roof system completed. This is not dried in.

Dried In
The term dried in simply means the side walls, roof system, and all doors and windows have been installed and dry from the elements.

Staining Services
It a good idea to stain the logs once construction is complete. This not only helps to protect your investment but it gives a nice appearance.

Chinking Maintenance
On the square log style, they require the filler in between each course of logs. This is called chinking. We use two types of chinking material, Log Jam or Concrete mortar with fiberglass additive for strength.

Our pre-design stock cabin designs will cost less than a custom design. But most of our customers go with a custom design to make a truly special cabin.

What is the life expectancy of a log home?

Generations. With proper maintenance and treatment, a log cabin / house could last for hundreds of years as evidenced by the century-old log houses and wooden structures all over Europe and the American east coast.

What are the problems with log homes?

Luckily, all of these common problems can be easily avoided with proper maintenance.

How much does it cost to build a cabin DIY?

It’s likely going to cost you as much or more than what we charge. Not only do you have to worry about non-bulk material prices… you also have to rent equipment and spend your own time.

Many of our customers are people who started trying to build a DIY and then decided better.
